ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State head cross country and tennis coach
Brenda Joiner has announced five total signings for the 2018-19 season in her two sports: two for cross country and three for tennis.
"I'm very excited about the future of tennis and cross country here at Henderson, especially with the addition of our five signees for next fall," Joiner said. "These girls are not just excellent athletes, but they are strong academically and will each be assets to our Reddie family for the next four years."
Cassie Berrier (Tennis)
A native of Midlothian, Texas, Berrier attends Midlothian High, where she has been a stand out for the Panthers for four seasons. Midlothian went 50-16 as a team and won the district title in all of Berrier's final three seasons. A Second Team All-District selection in No. 1 and No. 2 singles as a senior, Berrier was district champion and a regional quarterfinalist in No. 2 doubles in 2016 and helped lead the team to a Bi-District Championship and Regional Semifinal berth in 2017. Outside of the lines, Berrier is a member of Student Council and National Honor Society.
Mikayla Braun (Tennis)
A four-year letter winner at Midlothian High School in Midlothian, Texas, Braun was a Second Team All-District Selection in No. 1 doubles and an honorable mention in No. 1 singles for the Panthers as a senior in 2017, where she helped lead Midlothian to a Bi-District title and Regional Semifinal berth. As a junior, Braun was a Second Team honoree in No. 1 singles and First Team selection in No. 2 doubles, as well as USTA 16 Superchamp. The Panthers had a 50-16 record as a team in Braun's final three seasons. Braun will be a two-sport athlete in college and will also run cross country for the Reddies during the fall.
Francisca Nyarko (Tennis)
Nyarko comes to Henderson by way of New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico, where she is coached by Dan O'Connell. A native of Winneba, Ghana, Nyarko played No. 1 for NMI in singles last season, won the individual regional title and was ranked 18th nationally amongst JUCO singles players.
Brennan Shamburger (XC)
A native of Cabot, Arkansas, Shamburger was a four-year letter winner in cross country for three years at Perryville High School and one year at Cabot High School. Shamburger was an All-District selection as a sophomore in 2015 with Perryville and helped lead the Lady Panthers of Cabot to the 2017 conference title as a senior. Also a four-year letter winner in track and field, Shamburger was an All-District honoree as a sophomore and a state qualifier in the 1600 meters and 3200 meters for Perryville. Outside of athletics, Shamburger is a member of Future Business Leaders of America.
Kaylie Wheeless (XC)
Wheeless comes to the Reddies by way of Midlothian, Texas, and Midlothian High School, where she excelled as a four-year letter winner on the cross country team. As a senior in 2017, Wheeless was district runner-up at the regional qualifiers and turned in a personal record (PR) of 21:03 in the 5K. She helped lead the Panthers to two district titles in 2014 and 2015. Wheeless also runs track, where she has PR's of 5:49 in the 1600 meters and 12:47 in the 3200 meters and is also a member of National Honor Society.
