Charles Payne was a four sport letter-winner at HSU from 1946-49. Payne lettered in football, basketball, swimming and tennis. He also made the All-Conference 2nd team. Payne fought for the United States at Iwo Jima and Okinawa along with the invasion of the Phillipines. After re-entering high school to complete requirements for a high school diploma, Payne earned both a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Science and Education from HSU. In his professional career, Payne taught, coached and administrated at Barton, Dierks, Pulaski County-McClellan, Hampton and Lake Hamilton.
