Donaldson participated in football and track from 1958-61. He was All-AIC from 1958-60 in football, team captain in football in 1960, NAIA All-American in football in 1959 and 1960, and won shotput and second in the discus at the 1960 AIC track meet. Donaldson signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1961 and was an assistant football coach at Henderson.
