    James Baugus ran distance events from 1967 to 1972 for the Reddie Track and Cross Country teams. A two-time All-AIC pick in cross country in 1970 and 1971. Baugas led the Reddie Cross Country team to their first-ever national meet.
He won the 1971 Arkansas AAU State Title at Burn’s Park in Little Rock running a 5000 meter course in 16:18. He later finished third out of 50 competitors at the Oil Capital Marathon running the 26 miles in 2:41.11. In 1972 he ran 2:41.11 and a 2:32.15 at Olympic Tries which was within two minutes of making the Olympics
