Steve Ray was one of the top distance runners to grace the campus of HSU. From 1976 to 1979 he rewrote the Reddie record books. Ray, a four-time All-AIC selection, was Henderson’s first runner to qualify all four years for the NAIA Cross Country Championships. In track, Ray set school records in the 2 mile run, 3000 steeplechase, 3 mile run, 5000 meters, 10,000 meters and the marathon. In 1978 he was the AIC champion in the 5000 meters. In his final year in 1979, Ray was a first-team All-District 17 and All-AIC selection. During his career, he won 56 individual races in track and cross country. He has been a coach for more than 25 years. During his coaching career, he has coached 90 All-Americans and15 individual national champions
