The Henderson State volleyball team got off to an early start against visiting Texas A&M-Commerce, but were unable to top the Lions (8-12) as the Lady Reddies (4-22) fell, 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21), on Tuesday night inside the Duke Wells Center.
On the strength of a .289 hitting percentage, the Lady Reddies were able to work out of a quick 7-2 hole in the first set to tie the match twice mid-way through. With the score knotted up at14-all, the Lady Reddies took a lead they would not relinquish en route to a 25-22 set one victory.
The Lions would rally in a big way after the set one loss. The rally would begin after HSU established early control in the second set jumping out to a 6-1 lead. The match would grow tight from there on with eight tie scores as the two teams battled back and forth. The final tie in the second set was at 20-all. Consecutive Henderson attack errors sparked a late Lions' run. A&M-Commerce would capitalize on the Henderson errors and closed out the second set 25-21.
With the match now tied 1-1, each team looked to gain the upper hand in the pivotal third set. For much of the set, it was the Lions who controlled the action. The Lady Reddies were resilient, however, as they rallied from a 20-13 deficit and went on an 8-3 run to get to within two points, 23-21. The Lions held on to withstand the furious comeback and won the third set, 25-21.
The fourth set saw the Lady Reddies control things early and up until just past the middle of the set. Then the Lions took over control 16-15, and stayed in front to the end earning the set, 25-21, and the overall match, 3-1.
Ty Lindberg led all hitters with 22 kills. The sophomore outside hitter also recorder her third straight double-double after picking up 11 digs in the match. Junior transfer Lauren Ray led all players with 22 digs.
