On Tuesday night Ouachita Baptist University played host to the second and final volleyball version of the Battle of the Ravine. The historical rivalry turned in another classic match-up between the two school as the match went the full five sets before Ouachita came away with the win, 3-2 (18-25, 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 15-8).
Henderson State made the short walk across the street and got the match started on a high note as the Lady Reddies (4-24, 0-12 GAC) took the opening set, 25-18, and did so in dominating fashion. HSU led that first set wire-to-wire and even held double-digit leads at several points within the set. In that opening set, the Lady Reddies hammered home 17 kills compared to the seven kills from OBU.
The second set would go to OBU, 25-18, as the Lady Tigers (14-12, 5-7 GAC) turned around their hitting woes from the first set to the tune of a .309 hitting percentage on the strength of 18 kills in the second set. Like the Lady Reddies controlled the first set, the Lady Tigers controlled the second set leading wire-to-wire to knot up the match at 1-1.
OBU followed the second set with a 25-22 win in the third set to take the upper hand in the match, 2-1.
Looking to stave off defeat the Lady Reddies rallied in the fourth set and as a team they turned in their best hitting set of the match hitting at a clip of .333 (17 kills – 3 errors – 42 total attacks). The strong hitting performance in the set allowed the Lady Reddies work back from an early 7-2 hole, tying the set at nine-all. OBU would not surrender the lead just yet climbing back ahead and holding the lead through most of the set. After the nine-all tie, HSU would tie the set up four more times before they took their first lead of the set (21-20) since the opening point went the Lady Reddies. A Lady Reddie service error knotted the set at 21-all, but HSU would go ahead on the ensuing service after a kill from Candance Redwine. The Lady Reddies would hold serve and came away with a 25-21 win to force the decisive fifth set.
The Lady Reddies got on the board first in the final set, but the two teams traded the first few points of the set. With the set tied at three-all, OBU went ahead on a kill Keely Howk and extended their lead to three points after a pair of Lady Reddie errors. The Lady Tigers saw that small cushion disappear nearly as quickly as it came as they committed consecutive errors to bring the set back to within a single point, 6-5. The Lady Reddies could not get any closer however as the Lady Tigers went on a 5-0 run to gain control of the set. OBU eventually sealed the matter, 15-8, taking the match 3-2 and earning the season sweep over the Lady Reddies.
Outside hitters Ty Lindberg, Candance Redwine, and Sarah Williams did most of the damage offensively for the Lady Reddies as each netted double-digit kills, 17, 16, and 12 respectively. Sophomore
Cheyenne Derr was a kill away from joining the trio of hitters as she ended the match with nine kills. Brooke Walford and Paulina Cross split setter duties once again and each was effective when on the court. Walford led the team with 33 assists while Cross recorded 19 of her own. Lauren Ray was one of two Lady Reddies to pick up 20 or more defensive digs as the junior libero led the team with 22. Lindberg was the other Lady Reddie as she ended with an even 20 digs. It was also Lindberg's 13th double-double of the season.
