Lady Reddies Handle Texas A&M-Commerce

Taking to the road for the first time this season, the Henderson State Women's Basketball team showed that they were up to the task of playing away from home as they came away with a comfortable 71-48 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday night in Commerce, Texas.

The Lady Reddies (2-0) got off to a quick start as junior transfer Sheay Longstaff drained a three-pointer on the team's first possession of the game. The early bucket gave the Lady Reddies a lead they would not relinquish the remainder of the game.

HSU began to pull away about four minutes into the first half. The Lady Reddies would go on a 26-4 run over a 12-minute period starting at the 15:56 mark to race out to a 36-12 lead. The 24-point lead would shrink to 14 points as the Lions (0-2) went on a 10-0 run to close out the first half, but the Lady Reddies still led 36-24.

Several times throughout the early part of the second half saw the Lady Reddies' lead fall under double digits, but the lead was not ever less than nine points. In that half, the Lady Reddies improved upon their 47 percent (16-of-34) shooting from the first half to shot 55 percent (11-of-20) in the second half.

Four Lady Reddies scored in double figures for the game. Coming off the bench, senior post Joycelyn Taylor led the team in scoring with 14 points. Senior Cheree Freeman and junior Jill Temples each scored 12 points, while Longstaff finished with 11 points. As a team, the Lady Reddies forced 25 turnovers and came away with 10 steals.

The Lady Reddies will be back in action, at home, on Wednesday, November 23rd as they will play host to Williams Baptist. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. to account for the Thanksgiving holiday.
