Tuesday night played host to the year's first Battle of the Ravine against in-town rival Ouachita Baptist University as the Henderson State Volleyball team welcomed the visiting Lady Tigers (10-8, 1-3 GAC) to the Duke Wells Center for a mid-week conference matchup. The opening tally in the year-long battle went to OBU as they held off the Lady Reddies (4-12, 0-4 GAC) in each set to come away with the straight sets win (25-23, 25-19, 25-21).
Ouachita took the opening set thanks in large part to a unique series of events at the tail end of the set. OBU gained set-point and led the Lady Reddies 24-22, but on the ensuing service attempt, the Lady Tigers were tagged with a service error for taking too long to get the serve away. The error gave the Lady Reddies service, but OBU was still at set-point. A service error by HSU's Ty Lindberg gave OBU the first set, 25-23.
In the second set, four consecutive kills from OBU's Megan Askew jetted the Lady Tigers out to a six-point cushion, 17-11. The Lady Reddies would pull as close as to within three points, 20-17, but OBU would stave off the surge and won the second set 25-19.
The third set was tight to the wire. HSU held a lead 21-19, but OBU was able to break the serve on an attack error by Lindberg and pulled within a point, 21-20. With service, OBU, on the strength of four kills by Askew, ran the table the rest of the way out winning the third set 25-21 and earning the straight sets win over the Lady Reddies.
Lindberg totaled a team-high 14 kills to go along with 10 kills to earn the double-double. Four other Lady Reddies recorded kills in the match.
Cheyenne Derr paced the defense with 14 defensive digs. Setters Paulina Cross and Brooke Walford each tallied double-digit assists with Cross finishing with a team-high 19, and Walford adding 13 assists of her own. Jessica Moss was a force in middle of the net as she assisted in denying four Lady Tiger attacks.
The Lady Reddies take to the road for a pair of conference matches this Friday and Saturday as they are set to face East Central Oklahoma (Fri.) and Southwestern Oklahoma (Sat.). The East Central match is set for a 6:00 p.m. start.
