Yet to enjoy the comforts of playing at home so far this season, the Henderson State Lady Reddie Volleyball team took to the road again Thursday night for the opening matches of the 2011 University of Alabama-Huntsville (UAH)/Country Inn & Suites Volleyball Invitational with back-to-back matches against the host school UAH and West Georgia.
Despite continued improving play from a squad that does not have a senior and a host of newcomers, the Lady Reddies dropped both matches on the night.
In the opening match against UAH, the Lady Reddies came out strong in the first set and were able to capitalize on 12 Charger attack errors as they cruised to a 25-19 win in the opening set. The second set proved to be a different story as the Chargers cleaned up their attacking errors, committing only three in that set while hitting at a .458 clip en route to a 25-17 second set victory.
UAH would go on to take the next two sets to earn the match victory 3-1. Sophomore outside hitter Ty Lindberg led all attackers with 17 kills. Junior Candance Redwine totaled 10 kills of her own. Newcomer Brooke Walford was active in the UAH match recording a season-high 30 assists.
Soon after the UAH match, the Lady Reddies were back in action, this time against former Gulf South Conference rival West Georgia.
The fresher West Georgia Wolves were able to withstand a strong HSU hitting performance in the first set as the Lady Reddies had a hitting percentage of .324, to take the opening set 25-21. The Wolves would go on to record a straight sets match victory by taking sets two and three (25-23, 25-17).
Lindberg would record 17 more kills giving her 34 for both matches, and Walford added 28 assists to her stat sheet giving her 58 for the night.
The Lady Reddies play two more matches tomorrow morning with the first match against Ceaderville starting at 9:00 a.m. followed by a 1:00 p.m. match against the University of the District of Columbia.
