Lady Reddies Play Well and Earn Split in Day One of HSU Classic

LeMoyne-Owen Box Score
-- West Alabama Box Score

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.
– A dominating three-set sweep of LeMoyne-Owen College kicked off the 2012 Henderson State Volleyball season in style, but a tough three-set loss to the University of West Alabama in the nightcap left the Lady Reddies with a split on the first day of the 2012 HSU Classic.

The Lady Reddies (1-1) came out looking sharp in their first set against the Magicians (0-2) of LeMoyne-Owen as they hammered home 14 kills on 24 attacks while committing only three attacking errors for a stellar .458 attack percentage. The hot hitting by the Lady Reddies propelled them to a 25-15 set one win.

As good as the hitting was in the first set, the Lady Reddies improved on it in the second set as they darted out to a 25-10 set two win. They recorded three less kills in the set, but committed one error on 17 total attacks for an attack percentage of .588. The third and final set of the LeMoyne-Owen match read like the second set did, 25-10 in favor of the Lady Reddies.

For the match against LeMoyne-Owen, the Lady Reddies had an attack percentage of .469 as they found the floor for 38 kills on 64 attack attempts. Junior Ty Lindberg and sophomore Jessica Moss were the most successful attackers as Lindberg sent home a match-high 15 kills and Moss turned in 10 of her own. Moss was the most efficient attacker of the match as only one of her attack attempts did not end in a kill for her. Freshmen Emily Belz paced the Lady Reddie offense as she was responsible for all 35 of the team's assists. Six different Lady Reddies recorded a sercive ace as the team totaled an impressive 17 service aces.

In the night cap, the Lady Reddies played well, but they were not able to translate the solid play into set wins. In the first set, the Lady Reddies held set-point when they led 24-22, but four unanswered points by the Tigers (1-1) of West Alabama gave HSU a tough loss in the set. The Lady Reddies would bounce back and continue to play hard in the second set. Tied at 23-all, the Lady Reddies fell victim to another Tigers scoring burst as they tallied consecutive points to win the set. The third set saw a little bit of wear on the Lady Reddies as they fell behind double-digit points early in the set, and they were not able to shrink that sizable deficit as they went on to lose the third set 25-18.

Lindberg was the lone Lady Reddie to total double-digit kills with 10, and she also earned her first double-double of the season as she netted 10 digs on defense.

The Lady Reddies are back on the court for two more matches as they are set to take on the University of Alabama-Huntsville at 10 am and Texas A&M University-Commerce at 2 pm.
