ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The final day of the 2012 HSU Volleyball Classic was not kind to the host school, Henderson State, as the Lady Reddies were dealt a three-set sweep by Alabama-Huntsville and suffered the same defeat to the hands of Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon on Don Dyer Court.
The Lady Reddies (1-3) jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the first set against the Chargers (2-2) of Alabama-Huntsville, but the Chargers went on a four-point run to take a lead, 9-8. The Lady Reddies would answer back with consecutive points to recapture the lead, but a 5-1 run by the Chargers vaulted them ahead in the set. After that run, the Chargers would control the remainder of the set en route to a 25-16 win. Henderson would go on to drop the next two sets by scores of 21-25 and 15-25.
Ty Lindberg led the team in kills against Alabama-Huntsville with seven.
Jessica Moss was second in kills with five. Lindberg and Moss also combined for 3.5 of the Lady Reddies' 7.0 team blocks.
Following the loss to Alabama-Huntsville, the Lady Reddies took on the classic's lone unbeaten team in Texas A&M-Commerce. The Lions (4-0) would remain unbeaten through the classic after taking a three-set sweep of Henderson. Despite the sweep, the Lady Reddies played the Lions very tough, especially in the opening set. In that set, the Lady Reddies twice rallied to tie after being down three points late in the set. The final of those valiant rallies came with the Lady Reddies facing set-point at 24-21. A kill by Lindberg and consecutive service aces by Reagan Large accounted for the team's scoring.
Lindberg and Moss were the top two attackers once more as Lindberg totaled 10 kills and Moss nine kills. Junior Malorie Kelly was also an active attacker for the Lady Reddies against the Lions as she recorded seven kills. Lindberg also topped the club with 11 defensive digs. Large and
Lauren Ray were just behind as each collected eight digs. Moss was dominant at the net as she tallied three solo blocks and also had four block assists.
The Lady Reddies will now travel to Huntsville, Ala. to take part in the Alabama-Huntsville Classic on Thursday, September 6th and Friday, September 7th. During the classic, the Lady Reddies will take on the University of West Georgia and Union University in addition to two of their opponents this weekend in Alabama-Huntsville and West Alabama.
