ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Sophomore outside hitter
Sarah Williams turned in her second consecutive match without committing an attack error as she led the Henderson State volleyball offensive attack with nine kills. The solid production from Williams was not enough, however, as Southern Arkansas picked up a three-set sweep of Henderson on Tuesday night at the Duke Wells Center.
All three sets were closely contested as Southern Arkansas was not able to pull away until late in each of the sets.
After losing the first set, 25-20, the Lady Reddies (3-8, 0-2 GAC) came out strong in the second set, taking a 12-8 lead. The four-point lead in that second set would be the largest lead of the night for the Lady Reddies. The Lady Riders (7-2, 2-0 GAC) of Southern Arkansas weathered that Lady Reddie charge and knotted the set at 15-all. From that point, SAU established control of the set and went on to take it 25-23.
In the third set, SAU was able to overcome 11 attack errors en route to a 25-22 win. Helping the Lady Riders overcome the high volume of attack errors was their 19 kills in the set, a set-high for either team. In that third set, the Lady Reddies committed just two attack errors, but they notched only nine kills in the set.
The Lady Reddies entered play as the league leader in blocks and against Southern Arkansas they added to their total with eight total blocks. The GAC's individual leader in blocks,
Jessica Moss, assisted on three blocks and denied one on her own for four total blocks. Four other Lady Reddies registered blocks, three of which had three blocks.
HSU will travel to Arkansas Tech to take on the Golden Suns on Thursday, September 20th. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
