ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Henderson State women's basketball team pushed their winning streak to five games after they gutted out a 51-49 win over the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith on Wednesday afternoon in the Duke Wells Center.
Similar to the last game played by Henderson, the Lady Reddies (8-2) struggled shooting the ball from the perimeter in the first half as they ended Wednesday's first 20 minutes with a shooting percentage of 30% (8-of-27). This time out, however, the poor shooting sent the Lady Reddies into the locker room trailing by a score of 32-25.
Coming out of the break, the Lady Reddies used an 11-2 run in order to capitalize on the Lady Lions' (3-9) sudden frigid shooting performance as UAFS missed their first 17 shots from the perimeter to start the second half. The Lady Reddies' run recaptured the lead, 36-34, with 6:25 remaining in the game.
A made layup by UAFS' Angi Ramey at the 6:11 mark ended the Lady Lions' lengthy shooting drought and knotted the game up at 36-all. Following that bucket by Ramey, the Lady Reddies gained firm control of the game as they ripped off an 11-0 run to take a 47-36 lead.
The Lady Lions would not go down quietly, however, as they ended the game on a 13-4 run to make the game as close as it finished.
Krystal Beachum spearheaded the Lady Reddies' scoring efforts as she poured in a team-high 16 points. Senior forward
Destiny Smith had the best all-around game for the Lady Reddies as she registered her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Smith also led the team with four steals and dished out a pair of assists to round out her stat line.
The Lady Reddies have now concluded the non-conference portion of their season schedule and will dive back into Great American Conference play on Saturday, January 10th as they travel to Bethany, Okla. to take on Southern Nazarene. Tip-off for the game is set for 2:00 pm.
