The first two sets for HSU started off rocky as Pine Bluff defeated the Lady Reddies after being at set point and won 26-24 to open the game. The Golden Lions dominated the second set, 25-15, and it didn't look bright for Henderson State.
But lo and behold, the Reddie Spirit caught up with HSU and they came back from a large deficit in the third set to begin their rally.
Head coach
Rhonda Thigpen called the team's second timeout as the team stumbled and trailed 16-9. Derr came out of the timeout with an attack error, but HSU turned it right around. Back-to-back kills by Goulbourne and one by junior
Jami Jackson (Kennett, Mo.) decreased the deficit to five. At 19-12, Goulbourne started a six-point rally for HSU.
Sophia Cansigno (Fort Worth, Texas) floated an ace past the Golden Lion defense in one of her seven serves in turning point of the game. Jackson put up a monstrous block against UAPB's Courtney Brand, to make it 16-19. After a couple errors by Pine Bluff, Jackson evened the score with one of her eight kills.
Tied for the fifth time in the set, Moss powered a kill in the back court to put the Lady Reddies at set point. Jackson and Derr teamed up to block Audrey Sherles and win the set and keep the game alive.
Set four was just as exciting as the last one and the Lady Reddies utilized all options to win 25-23. HSU took the early 6-2, before Pine Bluff called a timeout. Two straight kills from Whitney Harris, evened the score early on in the set 7-7. After an improper request call on HSU, the Golden Lions took the 15-12 lead, led by Ashlie Jones with three kills.
Henderson State called a timeout to regroup and that's exactly what they did. Winning four of the next five points, HSU flustered Pine Bluff and the team was issued a yellow card as the score reached 16-16. The Golden Lions answered by taking a 19-16 lead.
