OBU Strikes First In Battle Of The Ravine

Henderson State Sits At 3-17 Overall Record

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Henderson State University volleyball team (3-17, 0-9 GAC) was held to yet another loss, this time by Ouachita Baptist University (11-7, 5-4 GAC) in the 37th Battle of the Ravine Tuesday evening in a jam packed Sturgis Center.

Sarah Williams (Jr., Conroe, Texas) had a big kill to set the tone for the Lady Reddies to start the match. Junior Jessica Moss (Garland, Texas) followed, finding the open court with a kill and Taylor Thompson (Jr., Yuba City, Calif.) served up an ace as HSU took an early 3-0 lead.

The lefty outside hitter from OBU, Abby Pickett, pummeled her way past the HSU defense with four kills in set one.

The first timeout called by head coach Rhonda Thigpen was in result of OBU going on a 3-0 run and the Lady Reddies trailed 15-11.

The break in action allowed Cheyenne Derr (Sr., Mansfield, Ark.) and Moss to collaborate in a block and return the ball to the Lady Reddies side.

HSU dropped the first set by double-digits, 25-15, as Henderson State hit. 129 but was unmatched to the Tigers' .464 attack percentage. Katrina Goulbourne (Jr., Visalia, Calif.) led HSU offensively as she was 4-for-6 with no attack errors and a .667 attack percentage.

The Lady Reddies continued to struggle in the second set as Ouachita Baptist took a substantial lead. Thigpen was forced to call a timeout as OBU reached a five-point lead over HSU, 18-13.

HSU fell in the second set but managed to cut the loss total to only a handful, 25-20.

Down 2-0, Henderson State got off to a roaring start as they held a 5-2 lead. Moss stood strong at the net, opening the set with a solo block to rev the Reddies attack.

The Lady Reddies took a 8-3 lead in the third set, forcing OBU to call an early timeout as Derr served an ace off an OBU defender.

The break in action turned the momentum of the game around as the Tigers scored the next four points to pull within one.

HSU lost the lead as Thompson found herself in the net as OBU took the 10-9 lead. Williams slammed one down in the back corner to even the score back up at 10.

Henderson State attempted to comeback on match point with a block from Moss and Williams, but the Tigers won in three straight sets. Moss ended the evening with team leading six blocks.

Raegan Large (Jr., Montgomery, Texas) was one dig shy of having a double-digit performance and she ended the night with nine scoops.

HSU will stay on the road for a rematch with the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday.
