Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – As alumni gathered in the Duke Wells Center to reminisce about their past performances as a Lady Reddie, they were unable to witness a win by the 2013 Henderson State University volleyball team (3-19, 0-10 GAC) as they fell 3-0 to the East Central Tigers (9-14, 6-3 GAC) on Saturday afternoon.
Henderson State has its best blocking performance in a three-set match so far this season as they stuffed 11 East Central attacks. Junior
Jami Jackson (Kennett, Mo.) and senior
Cheyenne Derr (Mansfield, Ark.) were the match leaders with six blocks a piece. Junior
Jessica Moss (Garland, Texas) also added five of her own.
Both teams did not dominate offensively as ECU edged out HSU in attack percentage, .191 to .140.
The first two sets remained close to the very end as the score was tied in 14 difference occasion and they was seven lead changes.
In the first set, the Lady Reddies fell 25-23 but had a strong showing by
Katrina Goulbourne (Jr., Visalia, Calif.) who was 6-for-8 with only one attack error, hitting .625. Four more kills by ECU was the difference maker as both teams were nearly identical on all other parts of the game.
As set point, ECU committed two attack errors as HSU crept within one but a kill by Ashley Williams closed the set to favor the Tigers and take a 1-0 lead.
The second set was another heartbreaker for HSU as they pulled within a couple points but the Tigers pulled out the win. Head coach
Rhonda Thigpen called a timeout as ECU scored on back-to-back kills and HSU fell behind by three points. Unable to alter the momentum after the first timeout, Thigpen called her final timeout just four points later as the Tigers extended their lead by five, 18-13.
Junior
Taylor Thompson (Yuba City, Calif.) found the empty court to score the 17
th point for HSU and cut East Central's lead. Goulbourne also got a kill late to pull within two but that was the closest the Reddies got and found themselves down 2-0.
East Central came out pounding out points to start the third set as they served up two aces and one kill during their opening 4-0 run. Between Thigpen's timeout and Goulbourne's kill, the Lady Reddies got on the scoreboard. ECU continued to find the open court, pushing their lead to seven points early on and eventually securing the sweep with the 25-19 win.
HSU will take a break from GAC play as they will host LeMoyne-Owen College on Oct. 29
th in the Duke Wells Center at 6 p.m.
