Volleyball Haunted With 3-0 Loss Against SAU

Raegan Large Records Season Best 20 Digs

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Henderson State University volleyball team (4-20, 0-11 GAC) was tricked not treated on Halloween evening as they suffered a 3-0 loss to Southern Arkansas (15-11, 5-6 GAC) in the Duke Wells Center.

Junior libero Raegan Large (Montgomery, Texas) covered extreme ground on Southern Arkansas' attack as she recorded a season best 20 digs in the three set matchup.

Junior Katrina Goulbourne (Visalia, Calif.) was the Lady Reddies lead attacker, adding a team-high 17 kills on 36 attacks. Junior Sarah Williams (Conroe, Texas) also produced double-digit kills on 30 attacks with 10.

Although both teams totaled 36 kills, SAU edged HSU in attack percentage, .143 to .061, which was the key to the win.

Henderson State did not pave an easy path, as they battled in all three sets to the very end.

Set one was dead even as Goulbourne slammed down a killer to make it 9-9. SAU scored three straight points as head coach Rhonda Thigpen called a timeout. A second timeout was needed shortly after as the Muleriders lead went to six. The Lady Reddies persevered and went on an 8-2 run as SAU went stagnant and the game became a 21-21 battle. Several kills later by SAU was all they needed to take the early 1-0 advantage.

The Muleriders took off on a 3-0 run in the second set and went ahead 13-10. Another run by Southern Arkansas put them up by a handful at 17-12. HSU only mustered nine of the 15 needed points, unable to even the set at one.

With the crowd cheering for a comeback after being down 2-0, HSU finally took the lead as they started the third set. As both team reached double-digit points, it became a back-and-forth battle. Williams spiked a ball off the hands of Taylor Thompson (Yuba City, Calif.) and the evened the score at 17. SAU scored five points to HSU's one, forcing the Lady Reddies to call a timeout. Although Henderson State pulled with one, Southern Arkansas closed out the set to their advantage and carved another win to their season record.

HSU's next action will include a trip to Memphis, Tenn. to partake in a battle against Christian Brothers on Tuesday, Nov. 5th. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
