Volleyball Shows True Reddie Spirit In Fight With Harding

Henderson State Falls To GAC Powerhouse

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Henderson State University volleyball team (1-13, 0-6 GAC) did not go out without a fight in a 3-0 loss to the top conference team, the Harding Lady Bison (15-5, 6-0 GAC). Fans gathered in the Duke Wells Center to show not just their support for the Lady Reddies, but to show their stance against cancer on Tuesday evening for HSU's annual Serve for the Cure night.

Henderson State played a strong defensive game as they posted 40 digs and 10 blocks, the highest in a 3-set match this season. Senior Cheyenne Derr (Mansfield, Ark.) recorded a double-digit showing in the backcourt with 10 scoops. Junior Jami Jackson (Kennett, Mo.) stumped the Lady Bison attack with two solo blocks and four assists for the second time this season. Fellow junior Jessica Moss (Garland, Texas) added four block assists as well.

It was the fourth time that Henderson State held a team under a .200 attack percentage as the Lady Bison finished at .190.  Harding had 44 kills but 22 errors in their win.

Set one was a tight battle but HSU fell 25-20. Moss opened the game with a kill from setter Taylor Thompson (Jr., Yuba City, Calif.). In a back-and-forth battle, set one had six tied score and five lead changes. At 12-12, HU scored back-to-back points but HSU did not falter. Katrina Goulbourne (Visalia, Calif.) knocked down one of her three kills of the evening to bring the Lady Reddies within one. Harding answered to regain that point back and HSU was never able to even the score or take the lead after that.

Set two brought the same intensity from the home team. Being down as much as four, HSU rallied behind three straight kills, one from Jackson and two from Sarah Williams (Jr., Conroe, Texas). Henderson State showed another bit of spark, trailing 16-12. Back-to-back kills by Derr and Goulbourne brought the Lady Reddies within two. Utilizing two errors from Harding and a kill from Moss, HSU evened the set at 17-17. After Harding answered back to extend their lead 20-17, head coach Rhonda Thigpen called a timeout. Hoping to change the momentum, Goulbourne slammed down another kill. Williams found the open court for her fourth kill in the set but it was the last point HSU could score and dropped their second set, 25-20.

Looking to shake off the first two intense sets, the Lady Reddies came out with a boom, posting a 3-0 lead. Harding stayed focus and even the match at 4-4, even extending it to a 8-4 before the Lady Reddies used their first timeout. Unable to rally back, HSU ended up falling in the third set, 25-15.

Henderson State will close out its five-game home stance against Division I University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10.
