Henderson State clinched a spot in the Great American Conference Tournament as the Reddies upended Southwestern Oklahoma 59-55, Thursday in Weatherford, Okla.
Henderson State, 12-11 overall and 7-10 in the GAC, earned a spot in the post-season tournament by virtue of East Central's 55-48 loss to Southern Nazarene. The Tigers could finish with no more than seven conference victories. However, the Reddies won both games against ECU and would claim the tie-breaker if the two teams would finish tied with the same record.
The Reddies built a 26-20 lead by halftime with the help of 8-0 spurt late in the half.
Henderson State would never trail in the second-half and at one point led by as many as 11 points before the Bulldogs made a late run.
Denzel Lyles led the Reddies with 17 points, while
Andrew Ensley scored 12 points along with 9 rebounds.
Southwestern Oklahoma, 9-15 overall and 8-10 in the GAC, was led by Rod Camphor's 14 points and 6 rebounds.
Henderson shot 41 percent from the floor making 18-of-44 attempts while a stingy Reddie defense forced 17 turnovers and held the Bulldogs to just 18-of-55 field goals for 33 percent shooting.
The Reddies will continue their swing through the Sooner State with a trip to Alva, Okla. to face Northwestern Oklahoma on Saturday with tip off set for 6 p.m.
