Henderson State's quest for an upset of one of the top teams in the Great American Conference came up short as Southwestern Oklahoma beat the Lady Reddies 76-70, Thursday in Weatherford, Okla.
Henderson State, 10-13 overall and 5-12 in the GAC, gave the Bulldogs all they wanted as the Lady Reddies held several leads throughout the game.
Southwestern Oklahoma, 19-5 overall and 14-4 in the GAC, used several runs in the second half in an attempt to pull away from the Lady Reddies including an 8-0 spurt to break a 40-40 tie at 12:12 mark.
Henderson State continued to nip away at the Bulldogs making things interesting late in the game as the Lady Reddies got within a field goal with 1:10 left as
Destiny Smith scored on a driving layup to make the score 72-70.
SWOSU was able to hold off the Lady Reddies with good defense and controlling the ball offensively the remainder of the game.
Smith led Henderson State with 21 points and 9 rebounds, while
Krystal Beachum scored 15 points and grabbed 8 boards.
Jill Temples and
Aungelique Sledge both scored 11 points, with
Dulincia Keener pulling down 13 rebounds to go along with 5 points.
SaRaya Oyler led SWOSU with 20 points, with Michelle Fisher adding 14 points.
The Lady Reddies ended the game shooting 38 percent from the field making 21-of-55 attempts, while the Bulldogs converted on 25-of-59 shots for 42 percent.
Henderson shot 76 percent from the foul line making 25-of-33 free throws, with SWOSU being sent to the charity stripe 38 times, making 20 for 53 percent.
Henderson State will play its final regular-season road game on Saturday when the Lady Reddies travel to Alva, Okla. to face Northwestern Oklahoma with tip off set for 4 p.m.
