ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Henderson State University volleyball team (0-4) will look to snap a four match skid as they host Oklahoma Panhandle State University Friday, before heading out to participate in the UAM Classic Saturday, squaring off against the University of West Alabama and Union University.
The Lady Reddies are set to face the Aggies of OPSU at 6 p.m. Friday evening at the Duke Wells Center, and then travel to Monticello, Ark. to clash with West Alabama at 11:30 a.m. and close out their weekend with a matchup at 2 p.m. against Union.
Head coach Rhonda Thigpen will look to returners, senior Cheyenne Derr (Mansfield, Ark.) and junior Jessica Moss (Garland, Texas) to lead the charge. Derr is averaging 1.33 kills per set and second on the team with 27 digs, while Moss has stockpiled 20 kills and .58 blocks per set. Newcomer junior libero Lindsey Calabrese (San Jose, Calif.) is holding the top spot on defense, averaging 2.58 digs per set.
Oklahoma Panhandle State (2-2) will be coming off a match against Ouachita Baptist, who is set to dual it out at 4 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center Friday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs will look to lean on Sarah Koster (Jr., Corona, Calif.) and Nicole Fournier (Fr., Houston, Texas). Koster has tallied 30 kills early this season, while rookie Fournier has totaled 35 digs early on in the 2013 season.
West Alabama (3-1), who defeated HSU 3-0 and 3-2 in 2012, will be led by Morgan Ray (So., Addison, Ala.), Carly Wehling (Sr., Readlyn, Iowa), Yanesha Johnson (Fr., San Antonio, Texas) and Abigail Mckenzie. Johnson and Ray have already put up 50 and 40 kills, respectively, in their four matches, while Wehling is averaging 9.64 assists per set and Mckenzie has amassed 13 blocks on the season.
Union (1-4), who dropped their match to the Lady Reddies, 3-1, in 2012, has already seen strong efforts this season by Kristin Cook (So., Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), Mallory Baker (So., Milford, Ohio), Elise Seufert (So, Lansing, Ill.), Deja Moorer (Fr., (Birmingham, Ala.) and Lydia Wright (Jr., Nolensville, Tenn.). Cook and Moorer have tallied the most kills for the Lady Bulldogs with 33 and 39, respectively. Wright has amassed over 100 assists and Seufert has been the rock defensively, with 69 digs. Cook and Baker are holding strong at the net, putting up 13 and 14 blocks on the season, respectively.
