Despite a valiant effort to rally from a double-digit deficit, Henderson State dropped its third straight game as Southwestern Oklahoma beat the Reddies 79-76, Thursday in Weatherford, Okla.
Five Reddies scored in double-figures with
Melvin Haynes leading the way scoring 25 points while hitting 6-of-10 from the 3-point line.
Southwestern Oklahoma, 9-4 overall and 6-1 in the Great American Conference, jumped out to a 30-9 lead midway through the first-half behind Rod Camphor's 15 points.
Five 3-point field goals, including four by Haynes helped the Reddies finish the half with a 23-9 run to cut the deficit to 39-32 at the break.
The Reddies, 6-9 overall and 2-5 in the GAC, fought all the way back and with 11:53 remaining in the game as
Taylor Smith got a break-away lay-up to tie the score at 51-51.
Haynes then gave the Reddies their first lead of the game with a short jumper on Henderson's next possession.
With the score tied at 55-55 SWOSU pushed its lead back to 65-57 with 6:50 to play.
Trailing 77-70 with 20 seconds left, 3-point field goals by Deiorvay Johnson and Haynes made the score 77-76 with 5 seconds left on the clock. A pair of free throws by Gary Inglett put the game away for the Bulldogs.
Henderson's
Ronald Lawson scored 13 points and had 9 rebounds, while
Kevin Kozan and Smith both totaled 11 points. Johnson finished with 10 points.
The Reddies finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field making 25-of-58 field goals including 12-of-24 from beyond the arc.
SWOSU was 25-for-52 from the floor for 48 percent while knocking down 10-of-20 treys.
Henderson State travels to Alva, Okla. on Saturday to face Northwestern Oklahoma with tip-off set for 4 p.m.
