A pair of free throws by
Melvin Haynes and another by
Ronald Lawson in the final 12 seconds helped propel Henderson State to an 81-77 win over Northwestern Oklahoma, Saturday in Alva, Okla.
Henderson State, 7-9 overall and 3-5 in the Great American Conference, ended a three-game losing streak with the win.
Henderson State trailed by as many as eight points in the second-half, but
Kevin Kozan jump-started the Reddies midway through the half with a 3-point field goal at the 10:56 mark.
Haynes and
Deoirvay Johnson also hit some big long-range jumpers, while the Reddies made 12-of-15 free throws in the final 10 minutes to rally for the win.
The Reddies used a balanced scoring attack as five players scored in double-figures.
Haynes led the way with 16 points including going 4-for-6 from 3-point range.
Kozan and Johnson scored 15 points each with the two combining to go 9-for-12 at the foul line.
Lawson and
Reggie Murphy scored 13 points each with Murphy pulling down a team-best 8 rebounds.
Bruce Wright led Northwestern Oklahoma with 17 points.
Henderson State shot 57 percent from the field converting on 28-of-49 attempts, while NWOSU made 28-of-61 attempts for 46 percent shooting.
The Reddies also were solid from the foul line making 18-of-23 free throws while also dominating the rebounding portion of the game grabbing 34 rebounds compared to 23 for the Rangers.
Henderson State will next play host to Southern Arkansas on Tuesday with tip-off against the Muleriders set for 7:30 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
