HENDERSON WINS HOME OPENER OVER TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE 82-76

Aungelique Sledge scored 20 points while four other plays scored in double-figures as Henderson State beat Texas A&M-Commerce 82-76, Monday at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia.

Along with Sledge's performance, Haleigh Henson scored 13 points with Dulincia Keener scoring 12. Deidra McCoy and Annie Thomas scored 10 points each with McCoy grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds.

With the score tied in the early going, Henderson went on a 13-2 run as the Reddies scored five straight baskets with Sledge getting a pair of layups while McCoy also scored four points during the stretch to give HSU a 17-6 advantage.

The Reddies led by double-figures most of the half until Texas A&M Commerce cut the deficit to 38-30 on a Abigail Leaupepe-Tele layup at the 2:29 mark.

However, Henderson busted things open as Henson hit a pair of 3-point field goals and Sledge finished the half with a break-away layup as the Reddies ended the half on a 9-0 spurt to take a 47-30 halftime lead.

The key to the first half was Henderson's work on the boards as the Reddies outrebounded the Lions 28-13 with McCoy pulling down 8 rebounds in the half.

The Reddies, 1-1 on the season, maintained their double-digit lead until Texas A&M-Commerce mounted a furious comeback in the final five minutes as Princess Davis rallied the Lions scoring 10 consecutive point to help cut the deficit to 78-74 with 1:03 left in the game.

Davis scored a game-high 26 points for TAMC hitting 10-of-14 shots from the floor.

Sledge pushed Henderson's lead back to five, making one of two free throws with 29 seconds left.

Arianna Caffey made the score 80-74 making one of two freebies, before Henson closed the door with two free throws with 6 seconds remaining.

Henderson State shot 41 percent from the field making 26-of-63 field goals, while TAMC shot 52 percent from the field including 62 percent in the second half.

The Reddies dominated the boards outrebounding the Lions 46 to 31.

Henderson State will begin Great American Conference play on Thursday when the Reddies play host to Southeastern Oklahoma with the opening tip set for 5:30 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia.
