Box Score 2 Henderson State picked up its first win of the season as the Reddies beat Philander Smith 25-21, 18-25, 25-23, 22-25 and 15-8, Friday in volleyball action at the Hendrix College Classic in Conway, Ark.
Jessica Moss collected 17 kills in the match, while
Nayeli Colunga totaled 11 and
Carli Owens added 10.
Samantha Sawyer had a big match with 46 set assists and 10 defensive digs.
Andjela Reljic also was solid defensively with 28 digs while also having four service aces.
The Reddies, 1-7 on the season, began the day with a tough loss to Austin College.
Henderson claimed the first set 25-18 as Moss was a perfect 6-for-6 in attacks.
Austin College, 10-2 on the season, claimed the next two sets with 25-13 and 25-15 wins before the Reddies forced a fifth set winning 25-20 in set four.
The fifth set went back-and-forth before Austin College broke a 13-13 tie with a kill by Rebecca Franklin and a Henderson attack error to end the match.
Moss had 16 kills in the match and an astounding .500 attack percentage, while Sawyer added 42 set assists.
Moss ended the day with 33 total kills and had a .288 attack percentage to go along with five service aces.
Sawyer totaled 88 set assists with Reljic having 44 defensive digs.
Henderson State returns home Tuesday to face Arkansas-Monticello at the Duke Wells Center with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
