The Henderson State men's basketball team fell 94-80 to Texas A&M-Commerce in a non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon at the Duke Wells Center.
TAMUC, members of the Lone Star conference, held a 46-35 lead over the Reddies at intermission, and would outscore HSU 48-45 in the second half.
Henderson State was led by
Aaron Cooper in his first appearance of the season with 22 points on 7-of-14 from the field.
Also scoring in double figures was
Kevin Kozan with 19 points including 5-of-9 from the three-point line, while
Ben Marello pitched in 13 points going 5-of-7 from the field.
Tavian Pomlee reached double figures as well, as the senior from Davenport, Iowa contributed 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
After falling behind 78-58 with 8:45 to play, HSU started a 13-3 run that lasted until the 5:17 mark, pulling within ten and making the score 81-71 on a Pomlee trifecta.
At the 3:35 mark,
Kevin Kozan nailed a three-pointer to pull the Reddies within nine, as HSU trailed 85-76.
However, the Reddies were unable to come away with enough stops down the stretch to effort a comeback, failing to connect on their last nine attempts from the field.
TAMUC won the rebounding battle 51-to-38, while HSU dished out 17 assists to just 11 for the Lions.
HSU finished the contest shooting 30-of-81 from the field for 37 percent including 11-of-26 from three, while TAMUC was 30-of-59 from the field for 51 percent.
The Reddies attempted just 15 free throws, connecting on nine of them, while the Lions knocked down 24-of-37 attempts from the charity stripe.
Jeremy Jones led the way for TAMUC scoring 22 points on 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from the three-point line.
HSU will prepare for its next Great American Conference matchup on Jan. 7
th at Southwestern Oklahoma with a Jan. 2 non-conference game against College of the Faith, with tipoff beginning at 1 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
