HSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LOOKING TO CLINCH SPOT IN GAC TOURNAMENT

The Henderson State women's basketball team will be attempting to clinch a berth in the Great American Conference Tournament as the Reddies travel to Weatherford, Okla. to face Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday with tipoff set for 1 p.m.

Henderson State, 9-14 overall and 7-10 in the GAC, is currently in sixth-place in the league standings and would punch its ticket to Bartlesville, Okla. with a win over the Bulldogs.

Aungelique Sledge has led the Reddies all season and needs just 36 points to become only the third player in HSU history to record 500 points in back-to-back seasons.

The senior from West Helena, Ark. is averaging 23.6 points in her last five contests, while also pulling down 9.8 rebounds.

On the year, Sledge is averaging 20.2 points per game including a total of 56 points in her last two games against Southern Nazarene (29) and Northwestern Oklahoma (27) to earn GAC Player of the Week honors.

Haleigh Henson is HSU's 3-point shooting threat having made 65-of-178 trifectas, and averages 11.8 points per game this season.

The freshman from Greenwood needs just six more trifectas to move into second-place for 3-points in a season and pass Mandy Hill who made 70 long-range jumpers during the 2001-02 season. Sledge holds the HSU single-season record for 3-pointers with 82 set last year.

Southwestern Oklahoma enters the contest with a 9-14 overall and 6-11 GAC record.

The Bulldogs have a balanced attack led by Chelsea Bates, who averages 12.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Jessica Penner scores in double figures as well, averaging 11.5 points and pulling down 9.1 boards per game.

Korina Chapman is also a force inside, scoring 9.3 points and averaging 8.5 rebounds per contest.

The Reddies won the first game between the two teams on Jan. 15 in Arkadelphia with an 85-73 victory. Sledge scored 35 points and had a career-high 16 rebounds along with 5 assists and 4 steals to lead Henderson.

Dulincia Keener also had a big night with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Victoria Stewart totaled 13 points and five boards.
Henderson State will next take on Ouachita Baptist at Vining Arena on Thursday, Feb. 26, before finishing the regular-season schedule with a home game against Southern Arkansas on Saturday, Feb. 28.

The game can be heard on ESPN 106.9 FM beginning with the pregame show at 12:45 p.m.
