Box Score Henderson State could not slow down the inside game of Southern Arkansas as the Lady Muleriders beat the Reddies 89-83, Saturday in women's basketball action at the Duke Wells Center.
Southern Arkansas, 9-17 overall and 7-13 in the GAC, outscored Henderson 52 to 36 in the paint while shooting 52 percent from the field.
Henderson State, 10-16 and 8-12, got off to a slow start as Southern Arkansas took a 24-11 lead with the help of an 18-2 run as the SAU scored on six straight trips.
An
Annie Thomas 3-point field goal at the 10:37 sparked the Reddies as Henderson's offense kicked into gear.
Haleigh Henson busted three 3-point field goals, while
Dulincia Keener started to take over in the paint scoring 11 points.
Aungelique Sledge, who totaled 11 points in the opening 20 minutes, scored the final five points of the half to put the Reddies on top 45-42 at the break.
With the score tied at 54-54 at the 12:52 mark in the second half, SAU went on an 8-0 with Rosa Bryant scoring three layups to put the Lady Muleriders on top 62-54.
Sledge then answered with a 3-point field goal and two free throws, with
Jasmine Settles getting an easy layup off a Sledge assist to cut the deficit to one.
Henderson would later take a 65-64 lead on a Sledge layup. However, the lead would be short-lived as Chanel Miller would answer to put SAU on top for good.
Sledge finished the game with 26 points including 12 rebounds and five assists.
Keener added 25 points and 7 rebounds, while Henson totaled 12 points including making four 3-point field goals.
Henson moved into second-place for 3-point field goals in a season with 72 passing Mandy Hill who totaled 70 in the 2001-02 season. Sledge holds the HSU single-season record with 82 set last season.
The Reddies finished the game shooting 46 percent from the field making 30-of-66 shots from the floor. Henderson State would convert on 13-of-20 free throws.
Henderson State will next travel to Bartlesville, Okla. for the Great American Conference Tournament.
The Reddies will enter as the seventh-seed and will face either Arkansas Tech or Harding on Thursday with the opening tip set for 2:15 p.m.Â
