HSU Volleyball Drops First Two Matches at Maryville Invitational

The Henderson State volleyball team opened its season on the road Friday night, dropping both contests to Texas A&M-Kingsville and Maryville in the Maryville Invitational Tournament.

In the first match against TAMUK, the Reddies took the Javelinas to five sets, but fell 3-2.

During the back-and-forth contest, HSU took the first set 26-24, while TAMUK took the second 25-17.

The Reddies reclaimed a 2-1 match lead after winning 27-25 in the third, but lost the fourth 25-10, setting up a final fifth set.

HSU would come up just short, as the Javelinas took the set 15-9.

Jessie Jacoby led the way with 15 kills in the match, while Violet Williams followed with 11.

Freshman middle blocker Gabby Ginapp also provided eight kills and led HSU with a .533 attack percentage.

Brea May provided 27 set assists to lead the Reddies, while Ryleigh Thompson had eight.

Kaylie Pyles also contributed with three service aces.

The Reddies fell in three sets in the second match against Maryville, (25-10, 25-14, 25-11).

Jacoby once again paced HSU with seven kills in the match, while Thompson led in set assists with 11.

Violet Williams pitched in four blocks to lead the Reddies on the net.

Henderson State will continue play on Saturday, with the third of the four-game slate set for 9 a.m. against Central Oklahoma.

The Reddies will conclude tournament play at 3 p.m. with a matchup against Southern Wesleyan University.
