After sweeping East Central on Friday night, the Henderson State volleyball team made it a perfect weekend in Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon, coming back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Southeastern Oklahoma State 3-2 (20-25, 18-25, 28-26, 25-19, 15-10) in Durant, Oklahoma.
The Reddies were led by sophomore
Sharon Tukuaoga, who had 28 kills and a .442 attack percentage, as well as a double-double from freshman setter
Haley Higgins, who had 36 assists and 10 digs.
In the first set, the Savage Storm jumped out to a quick 12-7 lead, and although Henderson cut the deficit to one at 16-15, SOSU finished the game on a 9-5 run to take the first frame 25-20.
Game two did not fare much better for the Reddies. With the Savage Storm leading 12-11, SOSU ripped off a 10-2 run to take firm control of the game at 22-13. Henderson did go on a 5-1 spurt to close the gap to 23-18, but SOSU took the next two points to win 25-18 and go up 2-0 in the match.
With their backs against the wall on the road, the Reddies responded in a tightly contested third set. The Savage Storm led halfway through 14-10, but Henderson fought back with a 7-2 run to take a 17-16 lead. From there it was neck and neck, as the two teams traded points all the way up to 25-25. After a Reddies attack error gave SOSU match point at 26-25, Henderson looked to be on the brink, but a kill from senior
Jessie Jacoby staved off the Savage Storm match point and then a kill from freshman
Adrianna Hartmann gave the Reddies match point of their own. This time, Henderson would not be denied as Jacoby finished the third set off with a kill to give the Reddies a 28-26 win and new life in the match.
Still trailing 2-1 in the match, Henderson came out with all the momentum in the fourth set, taking an early 9-3 lead. SOSU slowly began to battle back, at one point cutting the lead to three points at 18-15, but the Reddies would prevail again by closing the game on a 7-4 run to win 25-19 and push the match to a pivotal fifth and final set.
After seeing their lead evaporate, and now pushed to the brink themselves, the Savage Storm started hot in the final game, jumping out to a 5-2 lead. After a quick timeout from head coach
Kristee Porter, the Reddies immediately went on a 3-0 run to regain their footing and knot the game at 5-5. For the next few points the two teams battled it out, with Henderson taking the lead at 9-8, six points from victory. From there, Tukuaoga took over. The sophomore led a statement 6-2 run to close the match for the Reddies, in which every Henderson point came from a kill, with four of them being from Tukuaoga herself. Her final kill of the match finished off a brilliant comeback, as the Reddies took the final set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
Several Reddies had big games, including freshman setter
Sariah Boney, who had 23 assists and five digs, and junior libero
Sydney Skelton, who had 20 digs to lead the Henderson defense.
With the win, the Reddies are now 6-3 in Great American Conference play this season.
The Reddies' next game is Friday, Oct. 21 in the Duke Wells Center against Southwestern Oklahoma State at 6 p.m.
