Second Half Surge Propels Henderson To 80-71 Win Over Oklahoma Baptist

Henderson State shot a blistering 66 percent from the field in the second-half as the Reddies beat Oklahoma Baptist 80-71 in Great American Conference men's basketball action at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Ark.

Five Reddies scored in double-figures led by Ben Marello's first career double-double as the sophomore from Port Orange, Fla. had 17 points and 10 rebounds which were both career bests.

After being held scoreless in the first-half due to foul trouble, Kevin Kozan scored 16 points in the second half including knocking down 4-of-5 three-point field goals.

Kozan became the sixth Reddie in school history to record 200 career 3-pointers as the senior from New Lenox, Ill. has 204 career long-range jumpers.

Kaylon Tappin scored 16 points and pulled down 6 rebounds, while Chris Hawkins and Brad Nairn both added 10 each. Hawkins also had nine rebounds in the contest.

Henderson, 3-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, got off to a slow start as Oklahoma Baptist would build a 38-32 halftime lead.

The Reddies did not convert a 3-point field goal in the opening 20 minutes and hit on 14-of-35 attempts from the field.

The second-half was a different story as the Reddies went on a 13-2 run with Marello scoring six points during a 3 minute span to put HSU on top 43-40.

Kozan would provide the big spark for Henderson as he scored 11 straight points including three trifectas, all within a 2 ½ minute span.

The Reddies up-tempo play wore down the Bison as Henderson maintained a double-digit lead for most of the final seven minutes.

The Reddies converted 35-of-67 shots from the field for 52 percent shooting while the Bison hit on 44 percent making 27-of-61 attempts.

Henderson won the battle of the boards pulling down 39 rebounds compared to Oklahoma Baptist's 29.

The Reddies will play host to Bible Baptist College on Tuesday with the first tip in the Duke Wells Center for 2 p.m.
