Henderson tripped up by Lions in final game of 2016

Despite getting 30 combined points from Brittany Branum and Torrie Thompson off of the bench, Henderson State fell on Saturday afternoon to Texas A&M-Commerce 65-60 in the Duke Wells Center.

The Lions jumped on the Reddies early, winning the first quarter 20-10 and eventually opening up a 30-13 lead with 5:54 left in the second. From there, Henderson responded to get back into the game with a quick 12-0 run to cut the lead to 30-25 before ultimately trailing at the half 33-25.

In the third quarter, the Reddies made their run, gradually chipping away at the eight-point TAMC advantage. Down 45-37 with 3:39 left in the third period, Henderson scored 10-straight points, six on 3-pointers from Hailey Estes, over the next two minutes to take their first lead, 47-45.

With the score knotted at 47-47 after three quarters, the fourth period proved to be tightly contested, as the two teams traded points for the first seven minutes. The Reddies took the lead 56-55 with 3:02 to go on two free throws from Thompson, but that would be their last lead, as the Lions scored the next eight points to seize control in the game's final minutes and pull away for the 65-60 win.

The loss drops Henderson to 4-6 on the season with all six losses coming in non-conference play. Despite the defeat, the Reddies kept the rebounding battle even with a bigger Commerce team, 48-48, and got 32 bench points to the Lions' 22. Henderson also won the turnover battle, forcing 15 Lion turnovers while only committing 13 themselves.

The Reddies will not play again until after Christmas break, when they face Southwestern Oklahoma State on Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center.
