A late second-half run fueled Henderson State to a 60-54 Great American Conference victory over Arkansas-Monticello at the Duke Wells Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Reddies would hold a 26-24 halftime lead, holding UAM to just 1-of-12 from beyond-the-arc in the first half.
After trailing 46-39 at the 10:13 mark of the second half, HSU would go on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to extend to a 51-46 lead on driving layup from
Kevin Kozan at the 4:40 mark.
With just over one minute remaining, HSU held a 54-52 lead before UAM's Vicktor Arnick knocked down a layup followed by a free throw on an "and-one" opportunity to give the Boll Weevils a 55-54 lead.
At the 36 second mark,
Aaron Cooper would drive the lane and bank in a layup from the right block in traffic to reclaim a 56-55 lead for the Reddies.
After UAM could not answer on its next possession, Cooper had a chance to come up big again, and did as he stepped to the line and knocked down back-to-back free-throws with twelve seconds remaining.
Monticello would answer as Richard Benedyth was fouled with seven seconds remaining and connected on one of his two attempts at the charity stripe, but Cooper proved his senior leadership once again as he stepped to the line to seal the win with another pair of free throws.
HSU limited UAM to 1-of-12 in its last twelve attempts from the field, and held the Boll Weevils to 32 percent shooting on 18-of-56 attempts for the day.
On the contrary, HSU finished shooting at 38 percent making 22-of-58 attempts from the field, and also hit 9-of-14 free-throws.
Three Reddies scored in double-figures, as Kozan led the way with 14 points and pulled down five boards.
Kaylon Tappin provided 13 points off the bench, while Cooper finished with 11.
Tavian Pomlee also had a strong performance pouring in nine points and pulling down nine rebounds.
HSU dished out 10 team assists in the contest, while limiting UAM to just three, and also forced 13 Boll Weevil turnovers while committing 12.
Arnick would lead the way for UAM with 17 points on the afternoon, and also pulled down 11 boards.
Henderson State will continue conference action on Monday, as the Reddies travel across the street to take on Ouachita, with tipoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
