Henderson State capitalized on a four-run fourth inning as the Reddies cruised to a 7-3 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma in the opening round of the 2016 Great American Conference Softball Tournament.
The Savage Storm would get on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when a Destiny Riddle bunt scored Jessica Simmons from third base.
However, the Reddies and pitcher
Michelle Sorensen were able to get out of the inning as SOSU left two runners stranded.
HSU then answered with a huge fourth inning, as Sorensen scored the Reddies' first run on an illegal pitch to tie the game.
On HSU's next at-bat,
Keirsten Seahorn advanced home on a SOSU wild pitch to give the Reddies the lead.
Shayla Wright would then step to the plate and blast a two RBI triple to right center field which scored
Morgan South and
Olivia Trapp.
Southeastern Oklahoma would respond with a two-run fifth inning to pull within 4-3 when Courtney Riddle doubled down the left field line, scoring Sydnie Kramer and Kennedy Been.
However, in the top of the sixth, Wright came through for the Reddies once again with a single to right center field that plated South and gave HSU a two-run cushion.
After holding SOSU scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, an
Ashleigh Erb double to left field in the top of the seventh inning extended the Reddie lead to 7-3, as South and
Alexis Morton scored on the play.
Wright, a sophomore from Nashville, Ark. finished the day going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a triple.
Sorensen picked up the win in the circle for the Reddies, pitching a complete game and improving her season record to 20-10.
HSU finished the contest with 10 hits, while forcing two SOSU errors as the Savage Storm left seven runners stranded.
The Reddies will advance to play the winner of #2 Southern Arkansas and #7 East Central in the second round on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Tiger Athletic Complex in Bentonville.
