Reddies Come Up Short Against Arkansas Tech in GAC Tournament Opener

Henderson State stranded 11 baserunners and came up short as the Reddies fell to Arkansas Tech 3-2 at the Great American Conference Baseball Tournament in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The Reddies, 29-24 on the season, will now face Southeastern Oklahoma in an elimination game Friday at 1 p.m. at Clyde Berry Field.

Arkansas Tech, 24-28, scored in the opening inning as Mark Wilson led off the game with a single and stole second base. After advancing on a sacrifice bunt, Wilson scored on a wild pitch by Reddie starting pitcher Zach Eschberger.

Henderson answered with a run in the third-inning. Hayden Lessenberry reached on a wild pitch strikeout and advanced to third when Tadarious Hawkins delivered his 11th double of the season.

Lessenberry scored on a ground out by Joseph Gary, but Hawkins was stranded at third when AJ Kruzel grounded out to first-base to end the inning.

ATU regained the lead in the fifth as Wilson again led off the frame with a walk followed by a single to left field by Dylan McDearman. Following a sacrifice bunt by Kaleb
Warden to advance both runners, Josh Watkins hit a sacrifice fly to plate Wilson to put the Wonder Boys on top 2-1.

After Tech increased its lead to 3-1 in the eighth on a RBI single by Seth Wheeler, the Reddies put together back-to-back singles by Gary and Kruzel to begin the bottom half of the inning.

Jared Gage then hit a smash at ATU first baseman Warden who touched the bag and got Kruzel in a run down. During the play, Gary was able to score when Wonder Boy catcher Blake King was unable to hold on to the baseball at the plate.

The Reddies would get no closer as relief pitcher Jesse Harbin held Henderson in check the rest of the way to pick up his 11th save of the year.

Zach Skelton pitched seven-plus innings, striking out seven batters in improving to 6-6 on the season.

Eschberger pitched 7 1/3 innings and surrendered eight hits while being tabbed with the loss and falling to 7-5.

Henderson totaled 10 hits in the game with Kruzel and Luke McGuire had two hits each.
