BETHANY, OK. - Henderson State had four players in double-figures, including
Torrie Thompson with 19, but went cold in the fourth quarter and fell to Southern Nazarene 84-72 on Saturday afternoon in Bethany, Oklahoma.
The first quarter was tight, with SNU claiming a 21-19 after the first 10 minutes, but they quickly extended that lead in the second, going on an 8-1 run to take a 29-20 advantage with 8:38 left in the half. The Reddies countered right away, ripping off an 8-0 spurt to cut the lead to 29-28 with 6:41 left, before SNU again extended their lead, this time out to 39-35 at the half.
The Crimson Storm came out and scored the first two buckets of the second half to push their lead out to 45-35 with 9:09 left in the period, but Henderson responded quickly, surging with a 13-2 run of their own, featuring two 3-pointers from
Hailey Estes, to retake the lead 48-47 with 6:43 to go in the third. The rest of the quarter was back and forth, with SNU eventually closing on an 8-2 spurt to seize a 61-59 lead entering the fourth quarter.Â
The final period proved to be all Crimson Storm, as the Reddies, who had shot just under 50 percent in the third, went cold, hitting just 2-of-12 shots from the field in the last 10 minutes, as Southern Nazarene gradually pulled away to win it, 84-72.Â
Torrie Thompson led Henderson with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists, while
Brittany Branum added 12 points. Estes also pitched in 11 points and
Haleigh Henson, who surpassed 200 3-pointers for her career in the loss, had 10.
Lexis Weber led the HSU rebounding efforts with 10 boards, including three offensive rebounds. As a team, Henderson won the rebounding battle 40-39 and shot 82.6 percent from the free throw line in defeat. The loss drops the Reddies to 7-6 in GAC play on the season.
The Reddies' next game is on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 5:30 p.m. against Southeastern Oklahoma State in the Duke Wells Center.
