Reddies' Upset Bid at No. 12 Arkansas Tech Falls Short, 3-1

Box Score RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Henderson State gave unbeaten and No. 12 ranked Arkansas Tech its best shot on Thursday night and took a set from the Golden Suns before eventually falling, 3-1 (15-25, 26-24, 14-25, 16-25) on the road.

SET ONE: The Golden Suns ran out to a 10-5 lead on their home floor, but the Reddies got kills from Karlie Greene and Courtney Bolf to take the next three and cut the score to 10-8. Tech made sure that the score would not be that close again, as it went on a 12-2 run to distance itself, ultimately winning the opening set, 25-15.

SET TWO: HSU found its footing early in the second set. Trailing 5-3, the Reddies went on an 8-1 run to seize their biggest lead of the match, 11-6. The Golden Suns came back quickly with a 6-2 spurt of their own to trim the lead down to 13-12, and from there, the two teams battled it out over the next several minutes, with neither able to pull away. Down 21-20, Henderson got kills from Bolf and Adrianna Hartmann, along with a Tech attack error, to pull ahead, 23-21, and put the Golden Suns on the edge. Tech responded with three-straight points of its own to swing momentum and give itself set-point, 24-23. The momentum would swing one last time, though, and it swung in the Reddies favor, as HSU took the final three points of the set on a Hartmann kill, a Golden Sun error and a set-winning ace from Bolf to take it 26-24 and tie the match, 1-1. With the set two victory, Henderson handed Arkansas Tech just its third Great American Conference set loss this season.

SET THREE: After dropping a set to a GAC team for just the third time this year, Tech responded quickly in the third, using four early blocks to grab an 11-5 lead. Henderson took a timeout to regroup, but it did little to stop the Golden Suns momentum, as Tech took the next four points after the timeout, and seven of the next nine, to gap the Reddies and pull away for a 25-14 set win.

SET FOUR: Henderson took the opening point of the fourth set on a service ace from Sariah Boney, but little went the Reddies way after that, as the Golden Suns won 11 of the next 13 points to take a commanding 11-3 lead. Attempting to stage a dramatic comeback to force a fifth set, HSU cut the deficit down to six points at 12-6, 13-7, and 20-14, but would not come any closer than that, as Tech kept the Reddies at bay to win the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.

GAME NOTES: Bolf and Sarah Boney both had double-doubles for Henderson. Bolf finished with a team-high 12 kills and added 13 digs, while Boney led the Reddies in assists with 20 and tacked on 10 digs. Defensively, freshman Destiny Haynes had a game-high four blocks for HSU and Sydney Skelton led all players with 16 digs. Zuzana Ondruskova registered double digit kills as well with 11 on the night. The Reddies became just the third GAC team to win a set off of Tech this season on Thursday night and the first GAC team this year to win a set against the Golden Suns in Russellville. The loss drops Henderson to 11-14 overall and 4-8 in GAC play on the year.

UP NEXT: The Reddies face off with rival Ouachita Baptist on Monday night in the Duke Wells Center at 7 p.m.
