ALVA, Okla. — Henderson State had the ball with 11 seconds remaining in a 71-71 game and a chance to take the final shot on Thursday night against Northwestern Oklahoma State, but a miss and a foul in the backcourt after a NWOSU rebound led to the Lady Rangers' Jade Jones hitting one free throw with four seconds remaining to win it 72-71 in dramatic fashion for NWOSU.
After an offensive rebound from
Bree Bossier on a
Haleigh Henson miss with 12 seconds to go in the game gave Henderson a chance to take timeout,
Hailey Estes missed a driving layup and then got too close to the NWOSU guard Jones as she tried to advance the ball near the Reddies bench, resulting in a foul. With HSU already in the bonus, Jones missed her first free throw but canned the second to put the Lady Rangers in front.
Torrie Thompson quickly sprinted down the court and put up a floater at the buzzer, but it was well short, ending Henderson's hopes for any last-second heroics.
Henson led HSU with a team-high 17 points and five 3-pointers, while Bossier added 13 and nine rebounds for the near double-double. Estes also nearly had a double-double with 11 boards and nine points and
Pink Jones scored eight in just 23 minutes of action for Henderson after being saddled with three early fouls.
Leading 41-35 at the halftime break, the tide turned for the Reddies in the third quarter. NWOSU got going offensively and shot 50 percent from the field in the period to out-score the Reddies 25-14 and carry a 60-55 lead into the fourth. In the game's final 10 minutes, Henderson took the lead on four separate occasions and won the quarter 16-12, but could never put the Lady Rangers away.
Henderson got off to a fast start in the game and went 16-for-32 from the field in the first half, but went cold after the break and shot just 35.7 percent in the second. Even still, the Reddies shot a better percentage from the floor than the Lady Rangers (42.6 percent to 40.3 percent) in the contest but were out-rebounded 43-39 and had 27 team fouls to NWOSU's 19.
HSU will play again on Saturday against Southwestern Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
