Reddies Defeat SAU in 3-2 Slugfest to Win Final Match of the Season

MAGNOLIA, Ark. — In what proved to be a back-and-forth affair all evening long, Henderson State came up with big plays late in the fifth set to defeat SAU on the road, 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 18-25, 16-14), and win its 14th match of the season. The Reddies' 14 wins is the most for the program in a season since 2010.

SET ONE: With the score tied at 18-18 after a tight first set, the Reddies took three-straight points on two Lady Mulerider attack errors and a kill from Adrianna Hartmann to go up 21-18. SAU trimmed the lead down to 21-20 by taking the next two, but two kills from Maddy Wisniewski, one from Zuzana Ondruskova and another SAU error helped Henderson win four of the final five points to take the opening set, 25-21. Ondruskova had seven kills in the set for HSU.

SET TWO: SAU got out to a big 15-5 lead in the second set, but Henderson put together a dramatic comeback with a 12-4 run which cut the lead down to just 19-17. The Reddies ran out of gas, though, as the Lady Muleriders finished on a 6-3 spurt to tie the match with a 25-20 win.

SET THREE: After a tight start to the third, Henderson got going. Leading 10-9, HSU ripped off a 10-2 run, behind kills from five different Reddies, to seize a 20-11 advantage. The Lady Muleriders did not have an answer, as HSU finished them off 25-16 to go up 2-1 in the match. The Reddies got 11 points off of SAU errors in the set.

SET FOUR: With a chance to end SAU's night early, the Reddies got out to a strong start in the fourth set and ran out to a 7-3 lead behind three kills from Courtney Bolf. The Lady Muleriders responded, however, with a big 18-5 run, which gave them a commanding 21-12 lead. Henderson went on a run late to draw within six points at 24-18, but the hole was too deep, as SAU won it 25-18 to send the match to a fifth and final set.

SET FIVE: The last set was a battle throughout. SAU got out to a 5-3 lead early before HSU tied things back up at 6-6 on two Lady Muleriders errors and an Ondruskova kill. The Reddies took their first lead, 9-8, on a kill from Bolf and then extended it to 13-10 to put SAU on the edge. The Lady Muleriders answered, though, and won four of the next five points to knot things up, 14-14. Needing just two points to win, Henderson came through. A kill from Adrianna Hartmann put HSU up 15-14 and moments later a SAU attack error sealed the deal for the Reddies, as they took it 16-14 to win their final match of the year, 3-2. Bolf and Ondruskova had four kills each in the deciding set for Henderson.

GAME NOTES: Bolf finished with a 17-kill, 19-dig double-double, her 20th of the season, to lead HSU, while Ondruskova added 17 kills. Both setters played well for the Reddies, as Sariah Boney dished out 35 assists and had 16 digs to notch her 22nd double-double of the year and Abby Blackburn tallied 25 assists. Hartmann chipped in 12 kills with a .348 attacking percentage and four blocks. Henderson had 67 kills in the match to SAU's 59 and held the Lady Muleriders to a .151 hitting percentage. The win is the Reddies' 14th victory of the season, which marks the first time since 2010 that HSU has notched 14 wins or more. Henderson ends the year 14-15 overall and 7-9 in Great American Conference play.
