Reddies Outlast Tigers in Battle of the Ravine 86-82

Henderson State ended a four game losing skid to its cross town rival as the Reddies beat Ouachita Baptist 86-82, Monday at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The Reddies, 14-10 overall and 9-9 in the Great American Conference, won for the first time over OBU during the Jimmy Elgas' two years as Henderson's head coach.

After being held scoreless in the first game, Kaylon Tappin led the Reddies scoring 27 points. The junior from Little Rock was 5-for-11 from the field but sunk all 14 shots from the foul line.

The Reddies held a double-digit lead for most of the second-half, but a furious run by the Tigers in the final three minutes cut the deficit to a single possession with 23 seconds remaining.

Henderson made just one field goal in the final 4:30 minutes but the Reddies converted on 13-of-15 free throws including six straight in the final 23 second with Kevin Kozan making the final four to secure the win.

Henderson built a quick 10-4 lead on 5-of-6 shooting to begin the game with all 10 points being scored in the paint as Chris Hawkins scored 6 and Brad Nairn had 4.

The Reddies continued to sizzle from the floor, at one time shooting 73 percent as Henderson led by as many as 13 points, 34-21 with 6:15 left in the half.

Most of the scoring was done from inside the arc as the Reddies scored 18 points underneath the bucket with Henderson's first 3-point field goal not coming until the 6 minute mark on a DJ Franklin trey.

The Reddies continued to control the game inside as Matt Panaggio battled for 10 rebounds in the half including three offensive boards which led to 6 points in the half.

Tappin entered the game at the 13:30 mark and proceeded to score 19 points in the half, making three 3-point field goals and converting all six of Henderson's free throws in the half to give HSU a 42-32 advantage at the break.

The Reddies continued their solid shooting from the field to begin the second half making five of their first six field goals, but the Tigers slowly cut into the Henderson lead as the Reddies could manage just three field goals in the final 10 minutes.

Free throw shooting played a big factor as the Reddies, the top team in the GAC from the charity stripe, made 33-of-39 freebies for 85 percent.

The Tigers also became familiar with the foul line making 29-of-42 attempts for 69 percent.

Three other Reddies scored in double-figures including Hawkins having 16 points, while Ben Marello added 11 and Nairn 10.

Panaggio led the Reddies in rebounding with a career-high 14 boards to go along with 5 assists and 5 points.

The Reddies finished the contest shooting 50 percent from the field making 24-of-48 attempts while the Tigers finished with 44 percent shooting from the floor on 24-of-55 attempts.

Henderson State will next travel to Searcy, Ark. to in a Thursday contest against Harding with tipoff at the Rhodes Fieldhouse set for 7:30 p.m.
