Henderson State began the 2017 baseball season posting a 4-2 win over Pittsburg State, Friday in Fort Smith, Ark.
The Reddies, ranked No. 24 in the Perfect Game preseason poll, got a solid pitching performance from veteran
Luke Tebbetts and a multiple-hit game from
Parker Jones and
Joe Myers.
Henderson scored the first run of the game as
Jordan Taylor smacked a single up the middle that plated
Alan Hall who received a two-out walk and advanced to second when Jones was hit by a pitch.
Jones drove in the second run of the game for the Reddies with a double down the leftfield line in the fifth frame scoring Myers who received a leadoff walk.
The Reddies extended the lead to 4-0 in the top half of the seventh as Myers and
Brentten Schwaab reached on back-to-back singles before Hall laced a double to right-centerfield to score Myers and move Schwaab to third.
Jones brought home the fourth run of the game with a deep fly ball to right field which allowed Schwaab to tag and score.
Tebbetts worked his way through seven complete innings, allowing one run while striking out two before
Jon Youngblood took to the hill in the eighth.
Pittsburg State managed a run off of Youngblood in the eighth before
Blake Patterson entered the contest to begin the ninth.
After a pair of back-to-back singles to begin the inning by the Gorillas, Patterson struckout Cole Brecheisen before issuing a walk to Christian Arnold to load the bases.
Patterson worked out of the inning getting Colton Pogue and Dallas Reed to ground out to end the game and secure the win for Tebbetts.
The Reddies will face Arkansas-Fort Smith Friday evening before a rematch with Pittsburg State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
