GAME ONE:
Michelle Sorensen threw a no-hitter and
Keirsten Seahorn delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning that scored
Alexis Morton, to give Henderson State its third extra-inning walk off win in a week, 1-0 over Southeastern Oklahoma.
Sorensen was untouchable all game long for the Reddies, but Henderson had trouble providing any run support. HSU threatened consistently throughout the afternoon, loading the bases in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but failed to plate the runners each time, stranding 14 in the game.
The Reddies finally broke through in the bottom of the ninth. With Morton at first after a walk, Seahorn got a hold of a pitch and drove it off of the wall in right center. There was no stop sign on for Morton as she rounded third and just slid around the tag at home to give Henderson a dramatic 1-0 victory and its third walk-off win of the week.
Sorensen's no-hitter was the 22nd ever in the Great American Conference, the fourth of her career, and moves her into first place all-time in GAC history in no-hitters. The extraordinary effort was also the first extra-innings no-hitter in league history. Over her last three outings, Sorensen has gotten three wins, pitched 38 innings, given up up two earned runs and struck out 46 batters.
Courtney Warren swung the bat well for Henderson at the plate, going 3-for-4, as did Morton, who was 2-for-3 and scored the winning run.
The game was the fourth extra-inning contest for the Reddies this week and their third win in those four games.
GAME TWO:
Henderson State, who has had a flair for the dramatic this week, continued its late-inning heroics in game two on Friday, as
Lakin Wolever, with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, ripped a ball just fair down the third base line to score
Keirsten Seahorn and give the Reddies a 2-1 win and their fourth walk-off victory in six days.Â
Much like in game one, HSU had chances early but could not score their baserunners, leaving the bases loaded in both the first and the fifth innings. It looked like the stranded runners would come back to haunt the Reddies in the top of the sixth, when Savage Storm third baseman Malisa Fleck crushed a home run over the left field fence to give SOSU a 1-0 lead. The lead did not last long, though, as Wolever, the lead batter in the bottom of the sixth, answered back for the Reddies with a solo shot of her own to left field, which tied things at 1-1 and gave all the momentum back to Henderson.
After quick work from starting pitcher
Sydney Bonner in the top of the seventh, HSU got going. Seahorn was walked to start things off — one of the six intentional walks she was dealt on the day — and
Destiny Garza beat out a poor throw at first to reach on an error, giving Henderson runners on first and second with one out.
Ashleigh Erb then singled, giving Seahorn a chance to score from second, but she wisely held up at third to bring Wolever to the plate. On a 2-2 count, and after the fifth pitching change of the inning from SOSU, Wolever delivered, beaming a ball just fair past the right leg of the third baseman to set off the celebration in the Reddies dugout and win it 2-1 for HSU.
Bonner got her second win of the year for Henderson in the circle by going all seven innings and allowing one run on four hits. Erb and Wolever both had two hits each for the Reddies at the plate, with Wolever driving in both runs on her home run and the walk-off single.Â
Henderson plays the second double-header of the series with Southeastern Oklahoma tomorrow at Dee White Field, beginning at 11 a.m.
