GAME ONE:
Henderson State used three homeruns to score five of its six runs and defeat Southwestern Oklahoma State 6-3 in the first game of Friday's doubleheader in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
The Reddies got on the board first in the top of the second inning, when
Selena Mendoza singled with two outs and
Keirsten Seahorn took advantage, sending a homer over the wall in left centerfield to give Henderson a 2-0 lead early.
SWOSU answered in the fourth, scoring a run on an RBI single from Sidney Kirk, and two on a Reddies fielding error, to take their first lead of the day, 3-2.
The Bulldog advantage was short-lived, as
Courtney Warren responded quickly for Henderson with a solo homerun in the top of the fifth to tie it up 3-3. The Reddies big bats were not done, though, as
Ashleigh Erb drew a walk and immediately stole second base to set things up for Mendoza, who smashed HSU's second homerun of the inning to put Henderson ahead 5-3.
HSU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, when pinch hitter
Michelle Sorensen singled to score Erb from third, helping the Reddies hold off SWOSU in the bottom half of the inning and win it 6-3.
Sydney Bonner got her second win in a row for Henderson, going all seven innings and allowing just one earned run on six hits. Mendoza led the way offensively for the Reddies, coming through with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Erb also scored twice for HSU, while Seahorn added two RBIs on her homer in the second.Â
The win is Henderson's second in a row, and just its third true road victory of the season.
GAME TWO:
Selena Mendoza and
Keirsten Seahorn both had RBIs in the fifth inning and
Ashleigh Erb crushed a three-run homer in the seventh to help Henderson State pull away from Southwestern Oklahoma State 7-3 and take both games of Friday's doubleheader on the road in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Much like in game one, the Reddies struck first, this time on a double from
Olivia Trapp that scored
Bethany Allen and
Michelle Sorensen to give Henderson a 2-0 lead in the third inning.Â
SWOSU answered back with two runs in the fourth to tie it, but Henderson responded in the fifth inning. Trapp got things going with her second double of the game to give HSU a runner in scoring position, and after a groundout advanced her to third, Mendoza singled her home to make it 3-2. The Reddies were not done, though, as Erb walked to load the bases and Seahorn reached on a fielder's choice to score
Rebekah Teel from third and give HSU a 4-2 advantage.
The Reddies carried the 4-2 lead into the seventh inning, where they got a big piece of insurance from Erb, who with
Alyssa Dixon and Teel on base, belted a three-run homer over the wall in centerfield to extend Henderson's lead out to 7-2. SWOSU got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but it was too-little, too-late, as the Reddies closed it out 7-3 to take both games on Friday.
Sorensen got her 13th win of the season for Henderson in the circle, pitching all seven innings and giving up just one earned run on five hits. Erb and Trapp led the way at the plate for HSU, with Erb plating three runs on her homerun and Trapp coming through with two extra base hits on the afternoon. Teel also had a nice day for Henderson, scoring two runs, while Mendoza added two more hits in the second game to give her four total on the day.
Friday's wins stretch the Reddies' winning streak out to three games and improve their record to 19-25 on the year and 13-19 in Great American Conference play. Henderson will play a second doubleheader against SWOSU tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
