Reddies split with OBU in Tuesday doubleheader

GAME ONE:
Ouachita Baptist used two early runs and strong pitching throughout to upend Henderson State 2-1 in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Dee White Field.

Ouachita went out in front in the top of the second inning, picking up a run on a fielder's choice and an unearned run on a Reddies error, to take a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, Henderson loaded the bases with no outs and got one run back on a sac bunt by Rebekah Teel, which scored Alexis Morton to make it 2-1, but could do no further damage in the inning.

Neither team could get much going over the next two innings, but still trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Reddies attempted to rally; getting runners to first and second with one out and a chance to win it. It was not to be, though, as OBU pitcher Marissa Butler got the next two Henderson batters to strike out to end it in the Lady Tigers' favor, 2-1.

Despite the loss, Sydney Bonner had a strong showing for the Reddies in the circle, going all seven innings and allowing just one earned run on seven hits. Morton led Henderson at the plate, going 2-for-3 and scoring the only run.

The Reddies were limited to just four hits in the game by the OBU pitcher, Butler, who got her eighth win of the year.

GAME TWO:
Behind four big first inning runs, three of which came from a Selena Mendoza homerun, Henderson State defeated Ouachita Baptist 5-1 in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Dee White Field.

The Reddies found themselves down 1-0 after an early error helped scratch a run for Ouachita, but Henderson responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning. After a throwing error on the OBU catcher advanced the runners with the bases loaded to score Courtney Warren and tie it up 1-1, HSU designated player Selena Mendoza took care of the two remaining base runners with a 3-run homer deep over the wall in left field to put the Reddies up 4-1.

Henderson got another run in the second, this time on an RBI bloop single into right field from Bethany Allen, which scored Brooklynn Jimeson from second after a double, pushing the Reddies lead out to 5-1.

After a 30 minute weather delay stalled the fifth inning, HSU pitcher Cayleigh Guthrie shut things down for the Reddies, retiring the next six Lady Tiger batters in order to close it out and preserve the 5-1 win.

Guthrie was magnificent for Henderson in the circle and got her third win of the year by going all seven innings and allowing no earned runs on just four hits. Bethany Allen, Alexis Morton and Mendoza each had two hits for HSU and Mendoza added three RBIs on her first-inning homer.

The win improves the Reddies to 20-29 overall and 14-23 in GAC play this season.

HSU will return to Dee White Field this weekend for its final home series of the 2017 season and will take on Northwestern Oklahoma State in two doubleheaders, beginning at 2 p.m Friday and noon on Saturday.
