GAME ONE:
Henderson State allowed Southern Nazarene just three hits for the game, but three proved to be enough, as the Crimson Storm got past the Reddies 2-0 in the first game of Friday's doubleheader in Bethany, Oklahoma.
The Reddies threatened from the get-go, loading the bases in the top of the first, but could not scratch a run, stranding all three baserunners early. Henderson got another opportunity in the second, when
Brooklynn Jimeson and
Keirsten Seahorn advanced to second and third with just one out; but again, HSU could not score, as the next two batters grounded out to end the inning.
After the Reddies stranded two more runners in the top half of the inning, Southern Nazarene finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases up for the Crimson Storm with two outs, and SNU centerfielder Sam Smith drew a walk to score the first run of the game and make it 1-0, Crimson Storm. SNU got another insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single to take control 2-0 heading into the seventh.
Down to its final three outs, Henderson attempted to rally, as
Selena Mendoza singled with one out to bring the tying run to the plate; but it was not to be, as the Crimson Storm got the next two batters to fly out and ground out to win it 2-0.
Henderson pitcher
Michelle Sorensen got the loss, despite allowing just three hits in the game. SNU did not have a hit in the contest until the sixth inning, but four walks, three of which came in the fifth, came back to bite Sorensen in game one.Â
Alexis Morton led the Reddies at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the day, while Seahorn also added two hits for HSU. Henderson out-hit SNU 6-3 but stranded 10 baserunners on the afternoon.
Crimson Storm pitcher Katelyn Brown got her 17th victory of the season in the circle and struck out nine Henderson batters.
GAME TWO:
Henderson State jumped out in front to start, but Southern Nazarene used four runs in the fourth inning and an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to defeat the Reddies in walk-off fashion 6-5 and sweep Friday's doubleheader.
The Reddies made their presence felt early in the game, scoring four runs on an RBI single from
Selena Mendoza and a three-run homerun from
Keirsten Seahorn to seize a 4-0 lead in the first inning. In the second, Henderson added another, when
Courtney Warren singled to score
Rebekah Teel, making it 5-0 HSU.Â
Henderson seemed to be in control, but the Crimson Storm started slowly creeping back into the game in the bottom of the second, when they got a run back on an RBI single to make it 5-1. In the fifth, SNU's bats exploded, as they used a single, two doubles and a two-run homer to score four runs in the inning and tie the game at 5-5.
Over the next two innings neither team could get anything going and the game headed to extra innings. In the ninth inning, the Reddies had an opportunity, when they got runners on first and second with two outs; but the next batter popped up to end Henderson's best chance in the extra frames.
In the bottom of the 10th, SNU broke through. With one out and an 0-2 count, Hope Martin tripled into right centerfield to give the Crimson Storm a runner on third, and the next batter, Kyndall Freer, singled into right field to bring her home and help SNU win it 6-5.
Seahorn had a great game for Henderson, going 3-for-5 at the plate and knocking in RBIs on her homer in the first inning. Warren was also 3-for-5 for the Reddies, while Mendoza and
Bethany Allen had two hits apiece.
For the second time on the day, HSU out-hit the Crimson Storm, this time 12-10, but again had trouble scoring baserunners after the first inning, leaving nine on in the loss.Â
Friday's results drop the Reddies to 23-31 overall and 17-25 in Great American Conference play. Henderson will face SNU again tomorrow in a second doubleheader, with the first pitch set for noon in Bethany, Oklahoma.
