GAME ONE:
Seventh-ranked Southern Arkansas jumped out to a big lead early and held off Henderson State 7-1 in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.
SAU opened up the scoring on a solo homerun from Maddie Dow in the third inning and then tacked on another run on a Reddies throwing error in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Muleriders opened it up in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs on three-consecutive bases-loaded singles to widen the gap to 7-0.
Henderson got one run back in the bottom of the seventh on a groundout from
Michelle Sorensen, which scored
Ashleigh Erb, but could not claw all the way back, and fell 7-1.
The Reddies out-hit the top offensive team in the Great American Conference 6-5, but had trouble getting base runners home.
Courtney Warren lead Henderson offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
GAME TWO:
Southern Arkansas used big bats and stellar pitching to defeat Henderson State 7-0 in the second game of Friday's doubleheader.
For the second game in a row, SAU got on the board first in the third inning, scoring two runs on a double by Jill Roye to take a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, the Lady Muleriders tacked on three more runs, when Monica Islava blasted a solo homerun over the centerfield wall and Roye doubled for the second time to score two, giving SAU a 5-0 advantage.Â
The lead ballooned in the sixth, when Roye walked to get her fifth RBI of the game and Faith Otts reached on a fielder's choice to score Brooke Goad, making it 7-0 Lady Muleriders. Henderson attempted to rally but could not get the best of SAU pitcher Victoria Taylor, and ultimately fell, 7-0.
Taylor brought her best stuff for the Lady Muleriders in the late game, going all seven innings and allowing the Reddies just two hits; which came from
Ashleigh Erb and
Alexis Morton.
Henderson will regroup and face SAU in a second doubleheader tomorrow at Dee White Field, with the first game beginning at 2 p.m.
