Henderson State belted out six home runs and totaled a season-high 20 hits as the Reddies beat No. 14 Southern Arkansas 13-5 in the opening round of the Great American Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday at Clyde Berry Field.
A total of 11 players had hits in the game for the Reddies with
Parker Jones leading the way going 4-for-5 with two runs batted in and a two-run home run.
Nolan Ryan also had a huge day going 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and a home run of his own, while
Hayden Lessenberry had two hits including a double and home run.
Colton Coffman also was part of the home run derby day for the Reddies with the junior designated hitter having two hits including a home run and a pair of RBI.
Jordan Taylor had two hits in the contest and hit a home run over the right field wall. However, Taylor did not touch home plate and he was credited with a triple.
Also having a home run was
Kearon Redmon in his lone plate appearance.
Bryant Haralson pitched 6 1/3 innings and struck out seven batters to pick up the win and improve to 10-3 on the season.
Haralson faced a scary moment in the second as Reddie catcher
Turner Sparks, in an attempt to throw out a runner at second base on a bunt, hit Haralson above the right eye. Several minutes later, with noticeable bump and a cut above the eye, Haralson battled until SAU scored four runs in the seventh that cut Henderson's lead to 9-5.
Henderson, 31-19 on the season, continued to score runs in the eighth and ninth innings while relief pitchers
Austin Cross and
Kris Priddy held the Muleriders scoreless the remainder of the game.
Haralson's 10
th win tied the Reddie record for wins in a season, while he increased his strike out total to 112 to tie for second most in GAC history. Â
Southern Arkansas, 38-13 on the year, collected 10 hits off Reddie pitching including home runs by Trevor Rucker and Mark Fontenot.
Southern Arkansas will take on Arkansas Tech in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. of Friday, while Henderson State faces Arkansas-Monticello in a winner's bracket game at 4:30 p.m. at Clyde Berry Field.
