Henderson State split a pair of non-conference matches as the Reddies volleyball team beat Texas A&M International before losing to St. Edwards, Saturday in Austin, Texas.
Henderson, 9-7 on the season, opened the day with a 3-1 (25-27, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17) win over Texas A&M International as three Reddies combined for 47 kills.
Courtney Bolf led HSU with 18 spikes in the match, with
Kamra Jackson adding 15 and
Adrianna Hartmann 14. Bolf also collected 11 defensive digs.
Sariah Boney had another double-double performance with 26 set assists and 11 defensive digs.
Sydney Skelton had another big match at her libero position with 26 digs.
After losing the first set, Henderson took advantage of 10 attack errors by Texas A&M International while Jackson and Hartmann combined for nine attack winners to give the Reddies a 25-19 win in set two.
In set three, Jackson gave Henderson an 11-10 advantage and the Reddies built a 13-10 lead behind the serving as
Delaney Price. Three more kills down the stretch by Jackson along with Price's serving led to four straight Reddie points which propelled Henderson to a 25-18 win.
It was much of the same in set four. However, it was the serving of
Abby Blackburn that broke an early 4-4 tie as the Reddies scored four straight points with the help of attack winners by
Violet Williams and Hartmann.
Jackson later recorded four straight kills as Henderson pushed its advantage to eight points with
Destiny Haynes providing the final spike of the match to secure the win for the Reddies.
Henderson immediately went back to the court and dropped a five set match to St. Edwards 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 27-29, 25-23, 8-15).
Bolf again led the Reddies having 19 kills along 19 defensive digs, while Jackson added 14 attack winners.
Hartmann finished with 11 spikes and
Karlie Greene added 10, with Boney having 33 set assists and 16 digs in the match.
Down one set, the Reddies put together a .389 attack percentage with 17 kills and just three errors to tie the match. With the score tied at 14-14, Henderson scored four straight points courtesy of a pair of kills by Bolf and another by Hartmann. The Reddies scored five consecutive points down the stretch behind the serving of
Sydney Skelton.
The two teams battled back-and-forth in the third set with Henderson rallying again thanks to Bolf's six winners.
The Reddies had a chance to win the set following a pair of kills by Hartmann to put Henderson on top 27-26. However, St. Edwards scored three straight to win the set and go on top 2-1.
Henderson fought back in the next set behind five attack winners by Bolf and four by both Hartmann and Greene to force a fifth and decisive set.
St. Edwards, 11-4 on the year, jumped out to a 4-0 lead and pushed the advantage to 10-4 as Henderson had just two kills in the set compared to 10 for the home team.
Henderson returns home on Tuesday to face unbeaten and national-ranked Arkansas Tech with the first serve set for 6 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
