HSU to Take on UAM in a Battle of Top Offenses

It will be a battle of two teams that average more than 83 points per game as Henderson State travels to Monticello on Saturday to take on Arkansas-Monticello with tipoff slated for 4 p.m. at Steelman Field House.
             
Henderson, 7-6 overall and 2-5 in the GAC, is coming off and impressive 106-96 win over Arkansas Tech in a game that all five Reddie starters scored in double-figures with Kaylon Tappin leading the way with 25 points.

Tappin, who averages 19.3 points per game, has scored in double-figures in the last eight games. The senior from Little Rock averages 21.1 points against GAC opponents.            
Josh Jones had a big game for the Reddies against ATU scoring 20 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. The junior from Memphis, Tenn. averages 15.2 points for the season and has scored in double-figures in all seven conference games.            

Chris Parker scored 16 points and totaled 7 assists against the Wonder Boys pushing his season average to 13.2 points and 4. 2 dishes per contest. The true-freshman from Plano, Texas hit 10-of-12 free throws on Thursday.
 
Brad Nairn posted his second double-double of the year against Tech with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The senior from Nassau, Bahamas enters the game averaging 9.8 points and 5.8 rebounds.     

Arkansas-Monticello enters Saturday's game with an 8-5 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the GAC play following an 82-78 loss at Ouachita Baptist on Thursday.         

UAM is a veteran group consisting of eight seniors and three juniors.  In fact, 11 of the 12 players on the roster are transfers. 

The Weevils are averaging 83.8 points per game with the squad hitting 51 percent from the field which ranks second in the league. Defensively, UAM allows 74.2 points per contest and leads the GAC in steals averaging 9.5 thefts.
             
Derylton Hill leads the team in scoring averaging 17.2 points including scoring 20 or more points each of the last four games. Last year against the Reddies, Hill combined for 35 points and 14 rebounds in the two games including a 20-point, 8-rebound performance in the game played in Monticello.
 
Cobe Goosby follows averaging 15.3 points, scoring in double-figures in 11 of 13 games. Goosby totaled 40 points in the two-game series against Henderson last season.

Also scoring in double-figures are Karim Mawuenyega and Tyrin Jones who both average 14.7 points per outing. Mawuenyega leads the team in 3-point field goals, knocking down 37-of-92 for 40.2 percent from behind the arc.

Henderson State leads the all-time series against Arkansas-Monticello having a 94-63 advantage in a series that began in 1931.     

The Boll Weevils won both meetings last year and three of the last four contests.
 
Saturday's double-header will be carried on 106.9 FM KYXK Arkadelphia/Gurdon with Cyrus Wittig handling the play-by-play and David Salley providing the color commentary.
 
The Domino's pregame show will air 1:45 p.m. with the women's game set for 2 p.m.
